Lyrics · artist-supplied

I’ve just been bailing water now that you’re absent
I pretend that I am talking to your ghost instead
Every day that passes pulls me in
Promised me you’d help me swim,
Never knew you’d let me drown
Was it me who let you down?

What kind of sailor wishes for the storm?
Like if I welcome capsize then I can move on.
What kind of first mate wants his captain gone?
When mutiny is mercy, I guess red skies are at dawn

It’s not the same you I’m with anymore
If I’m the sailor, you’re the storm
There’s no one left to get me back to shore
Sometimes I contemplate walking right through that door
So forgive me if I’m not sure what you’re waiting for
There is a place I’ve seen that has no time, no space, and no other
And we finally meet there we can understand each other

What kind of sailor wishes for the storm?
Like if I welcome capsize then I can move on.
What kind of first mate wants his captain gone?
When mutiny is mercy, I guess red skies are at dawn

I guess red skies are at dawn
I guess red skies are at dawn
I guess red skies are at dawn
I guess red skies are at dawn
I guess red skies are at dawn
I guess red skies are at dawn
I guess red skies are at dawn
I guess red skies are at dawn
I guess red skies are at dawn

Artist context

The artist has explicitly described the song as anticipatory grief rather than a conventional breakup song. The sailor wants the storm because the waiting has become unbearable. The recurring phrase “I guess” is part of a broader writing pattern: acceptance of conditions the narrator cannot fully control.

Working interpretation · analysis

> **Interpretation note:** This section is analysis/inference, not an authoritative statement of authorial intent unless the Artist Context above says otherwise.

The nautical system does the emotional work. The loved person can be captain, storm, absence, and the one who once promised to help the narrator swim. Those roles contradict each other because anticipatory grief itself is contradictory. “Mutiny is mercy” compresses the moral injury of wishing for an ending that would also constitute a loss. The repeated “red skies are at dawn” turns the traditional warning sign into a mantra of inevitability: the storm is not merely possible anymore; its warning has become the environment.

Alternate reading · non-exclusive

> **Interpretation note:** This is an intentionally non-exclusive reading of the song.

The artist also recognized a faith-struggle reading. God can occupy the absent captain role: the one expected to guide or save, yet experienced as absent—or even as the storm itself. In that reading, “Was it me who let you down?” becomes spiritual self-blame, while the imagined place beyond time and space becomes a hope that the apparent contradiction can eventually be understood.
